A message from our CEOOur Sustainability roadmap
TMD Friction is working towards achieving the following objectives.
-
01. Objectives for 2024
To further reduce energy usage by 10% and reduce VOC emissions during the assembly of brake pads.
-
02. Objectives for 2025
To reduce landfill waste by 20% and ethically source by 100%. To have an embedded wellbeing programme for employees. To keep reducing the use of copper in new products with the overall goal to be copper-free.
-
03. Objectives for 2030
To move to 100% renewable energy, decrease natural gas use by 20% and have 80% of core products’ greenhouse gas emissions calculated to sum the product carbon footprint (PCF) over different stages of its life cycle.
-
04. Objectives for 2040
To reduce carbon emissions in logistics by 10% and make our product packaging 100% recyclable.
Our approach to sustainability
TMD Friction has a legacy of pioneering more sustainable practices. But we’re not stopping there. We use our Environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework to assess our business practices and performance on various sustainability and ethical issues. Our pioneering commitment to drive change towards more sustainable braking is aligned with the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs).
-
01. Materials
We were the first company to supply copper-free brake pads for high performance vehicles. In addition, our Textar brand was the first to introduce lightweight brake pads in the aftermarket, which reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
-
02. Standards
We were instrumental in the development of the Eco-Table – a set of ecological/environmental classification standards for friction materials. Today it is a universally recognised standard. TMD Friction is also currently part of the working group developing a suitable approach as the basis for new Euro 7 standards for brake emissions.
-
03. Energy
We have ambitious goals to reduce our carbon footprint further and demonstrate there is a greener, cleaner way to manufacture brake friction products. That’s why we have committed to providing our facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2030.
All of our regions are working to reduce their emissions and energy usage. We have already signed a long-term partnership with Iberdrola to power our German facilities with renewable energy from 2027. This was the first in a long line of agreements to ensure we fulfil our renewable energy goals. We optimised the temperature at our plant in Coswig and reduced heated areas by 65%, saving approx. 250 MWh/year. And in Valencia, solar panels will be installed to produce 16% of the plant’s annual energy consumption.
Driving sustainable development
TMD Friction is passionate about promoting sustainability in every aspect of our business. We’re aware of the impact our activities have on the environment, our employees and the communities in which we operate. We invest in our entire ecosystem as part of our ongoing commitment to reduce environmental impact and aim to achieve a more sustainable mobility future – from renewable energy and reducing waste to more efficient products and an ethical supply chain.
Our commitment to the ESG framework
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) is the framework we use to assess our business practices and performance on various sustainability and ethical issues. It is aligned with the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs).
