TMD Friction partners with Iberdrola Deutschland to access greener energy

New partnership in Germany and further international business collaborations to be explored together with Iberdrola to help TMD Friction to provide 100% renewable energy across its global sites by 2030, as part of its ambitious sustainability roadmap.

Leverkusen, 4th October 2023.

TMD Friction, a leading global manufacturer of brake friction products, has signed a long-term partnership agreement with Iberdrola Deutschland to provide its facilities with greener energy. The new partnership is part of the manufacturer’s sustainability commitment to provide all its global facilities with renewable energy by 2030.

The first project to be implemented will be for TMD Friction’s facilities in Germany. The agreement covers a supply of approximately 50 GWh of sustainably generated renewable electricity per year, and will cover more than 50 percent of TMD Friction’s total demand in Germany from 2027. The green electricity will be supplied by the Windanker offshore wind farm of Iberdrola Deutschland, which is currently in the planning stage.

Together with Iberdrola TMD Friction is exploring additional business collaborations in the UK, Europe and Brazil, to realize its 100% renewable energy plans globally. TMD Friction has ambitious goals to reduce its carbon footprint and demonstrate there is a greener, cleaner way to manufacture brake friction products.

David Baines, CEO of TMD Friction, said: “As a leading global brake friction manufacturer, we take our responsibilities to our people, customers, environment and society very seriously. This is why we have set ourselves extremely ambitious targets to not only continue pioneering sustainable braking solutions, but to also transform how we manufacture our products and approach every aspect within our ecosystem to ensure we reduce our impact, now and in the future. The partnership with Iberdrola in Germany demonstrates our commitment to making our sustainability roadmap a reality and is the first one in a long line of agreements we will be undertaking as a business to achieve our objectives.”

Iberdrola, Europe’s largest electricity utility by market capitalisation and one of the world’s top three electricity companies, is a leader in renewables, spearheading the energy transition to a low carbon economy. With a focus on renewable energy, smart networks and smart solutions for customers, Iberdrola’s main markets include Europe (Spain, the United Kingdom, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy and Greece), the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Australia. The company is also present in growth markets such as Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, Sweden and Poland, among others.

The Windanker offshore wind farm, which is Iberdrola Deutschland’s third offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea and follows on from the Wikinger and Baltic Eagle projects, will comprise 21 offshore wind turbines (15 MW each) that will be connected to the grid in 2026 with a grid total capacity of 300 MW. Windanker will cover an area of approximately 17.9 km² and will be located about 38 km northeast of the Jasmund National Park on the German island of Rügen.

Felipe Montero, CEO of Iberdrola Deutschland, said: “We are delighted about the long-term energy partnership at eye level that we are entering into with TMD Friction. The cooperation with leading companies from the German SME sector is a key component of our growth strategy in Germany. We plan to expand the energy partnership with TMD Friction internationally as well. Currently we are also exploring further clean energy initiatives with TMD Friction in the UK and Brazil.
